UV or LED Lamps?
There are two kinds of lamps used to cure gel nail polish; UV or LED. Which should you buy; UV or LED lamps?
Should I Choose UV or LED Lamps?
When you’re choosing a nail lamp, there are few things to think about such as:
What you want from a lamp;
How much you want to spend;
The products you’re going to use with it.
Here are some things you need to know that might just make your decision easier.
What is the Difference Between UV and LED Lamps?
The main difference between a UV and an LED lamp is the type of radiation it gives off. Your gel polish contains chemicals that require exposure to UV light to harden.
UV and LED lamps both emit UV radiation, however, UV lamps give off a wider spectrum of UV radiation than LED lamps.
As well as this technical difference, there are other differences you need to know about if you’re choosing between UV or LED lamps:
- LED lamps are typically a bit more pricey though they do tend to last longer. LED lamps last for around 50,000 hours whereas UV bulbs need changing every 6 months or so.
- LED lamps tend to cure gel polish faster than UV lamps. An LED lamp can cure a layer of gel polish in around 30 seconds, compared to 2 minutes for some UV lamps.
- You can’t cure all types of gel polish with an LED lamp. Some polishes are formulated especially for use with UV lamps. Always check what type of lamp the brand you are using is compatible with.
- There are lamps on the market that have both LED and UV bulbs.
Can You Use UV or LED Lamps on Regular Nail Polish?
No, because standard nail polish has a completely different formula. It doesn’t contain any of those chemicals gel polish has to help it cure.
What Sort of Wattage Should I Look For?
When looking for a lamp, you’ll notice that most professional LED and UV nail lamps are around 36 watts. This higher wattage can help cure polish quicker. You’ll see that some brands recommend using their lamp alongside their gel polishes. This is not a gimmick, it’s just making sure you use the right wattage for professional results.
What About Safety: Are UV or LED Lamps Safer?
There has been some concern around regular use of UV light on the hands and nails. While there’s no evidence to say that it’s damaging, if you or your clients are concerned, opt for an LED lamp.
